On The Doorstep

Rising from the border between England and Wales, the Breidden Hills are a small but striking range shaped by ancient volcanic forces. Their rugged peaks and rocky outcrops have been landmarks for centuries, dotted with hill forts, monuments, and stories. Today, they offer panoramic views, peaceful walks, and a deep sense of connection to the land. There are also three pubs within walking distance of Gronwyn, one just a short stroll down the track…perfect for a post-hike pint or hearty meal by the fire.

  • Moel y Golfa

Gronwyn Retreats is nestled halfway up the slopes of Moely Golfa, the tallest of the Breidden Hills. A rewarding 30-minute walk from the site takes you to its summit, where a striking granite monument stands watch over the land. From the top, you’ll find sweeping views across the valleys and out towards the market town of Welshpool—breathtaking in every sense of the word.

  • Middletown Hill

Rising just across from the site, Middletown Hill is home to a well-preserved ancient hill fort, offering a glimpse into the area’s Iron Age past. The walk to the summit follows open, grassy slopes and rewards you with peaceful views back across to Moely Golfa and the valley below. It’s a gentle, grounding climb with a real sense of place.

  • Breidden Hill & Rodney's Pillar

Standing proud on the summit of Breidden Hill, Rodney’s Pillar is a striking monument built in honour of Admiral Rodney in the 18th century. The walk to the top takes a little longer—expect around 1 to 2 hours depending on your pace—but it’s well worth the effort. The route winds through quiet woodland before opening up to expansive views across the Shropshire border and deep into Wales. A favourite for walkers looking for a good stretch and a spectacular payoff.
