The Campsite

Tucked into the hillside, our camping field is open to the sky and surrounded by views that stretch across valley, forest, and peak. Each spot has its own outlook, shaped by the land’s natural slope. Pitches are generously spaced to give guests a sense of privacy without losing the feel of the wider landscape. The space is kept natural - a simple, peaceful setting designed for tents of all kinds, and made for slowing down.

You’ll also find the quiet presence of a stone cottage ruin here, a small reminder of the life once lived on this hillside—a detail that adds just a little extra magic to the view.

Gronwyn is a bring-your-own-tent site, and at present we’re not able to accommodate campervans due to access.

The Details

  • Pitches

All of our pitches are 10 x 10 metres, with plenty of breathing room between each one.We operate a first come, first served approach across the site, so you’re free to choose the spot that suits you best. If you're booking multiple pitches and would like to be next to each other, we’re happy to arrange that. You can pitch to face inwards towards the communal firepit and up to Moel y Golfa, or turn outward to take in the views down through the valley, with Long Mountain in the distance. Either way, you're surrounded by peace, space, and the quiet beauty of the hills.

  • Happy Tails at Gronwyn

Dogs are very welcome at Gronwyn Retreats—up to two per pitch. We just ask that they stay on leads at all times and that all waste is cleared up and disposed of in the dog bins provided. We’re keen to keep the field safe and lovely for everyone, paws and all. Just don’t forget to mention your pup(s) when you book, so we can be ready with a warm welcome. Our own spaniels will be happy to say hello too—always keen for a sniff and a friendly meet.

  • Light It Up

Firepits, small barbecues, and camping stoves are all welcome at Gronwyn. Sustainably sourced firewood from the surrounding forest is available to purchase—just get in touch if you'd like a bag. At the heart of the field is a communal firepit with handmade benches, open to all for evening chats, toasted marshmallows, or simply watching the flames. Kumbaya-ing is entirely optional.

Getting Here

Gronwyn Retreats feels wonderfully tucked away, but it’s easy to reach—just 10 minutes off the A483 between Shrewsbury and Welshpool. Access is via the track road that leads from the Middletown Hill walkers’ car park. Off the track to the right, you’ll see the entrance to Gronwyn. Parking will be clearly signposted, and from there it’s a short 200-metre walk through Wyle Oak field into the main camping area - Francis field. While vehicles aren’t allowed in the camping field itself, we’re always happy to help if you need a hand with heavier items. You can find us using the What3Words link below.

Loos, Showers, and All That Jazz

  • The Loos

We’re an off-grid site with a light touch on the land, and that includes our loos. We use compost toilets—clean, odour-free. They work a little differently to what you might be used to: no flush, just a scoop of Finnish sawdust after each visit. Everything is well-maintained, clearly signed, and surprisingly pleasant (we promise).

  • Showers

We might be off-grid, but there’s no cold rinse here with our toasty hot shower (unless the pond takes your fancy). While we’re lucky to have a generous water source, we do ask guests to keep showers short and sweet—just to keep things flowing kindly for everyone (and the land).

  • Washing Up Station

There’s a small washing-up station on site for your pots and pans—simple and practical with a cold water feed. As with everything here, we ask that it’s used mindfully to help protect our water source. A quick swish and rinse is all part of the off-grid rhythm.

  • Leave No Trace (But Good Memories)

We provide bins on site and ask all guests to recycle as much as possible—Wales is proud to have a national recycling policy, and we’re right behind it. Bins are clearly marked to keep things simple. All we ask is that any bulky waste (like broken gear or large packaging) is taken away with you, so we can keep the site clean, light, and lovely for everyone.
